INFO:Atkins is a former central and side midfielder, who could play on both sides, mostly on the right. He also acted as right back in his late years. He had his best seasons at Blackburn Rovers from 1988 to 1995, playing 272 matches, scoring 42 goals and winning the 1994-95 Premier League during his last season at the club. He played also for Scunthorpe United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, York City, Doncaster Rovers, Hull City, Shrewsbury Town and Harrogate Town, retiring in 2004.
Considered one of Blackburn's most underrated and important players, especially during the Premier League winning season, where he scored 6 goals in 34 matches and formed a fantastic midfield with captain Tim Sherwood, Atkins was a combative player, right-footed but decent with the left foot as well, not gifted with incredible technique but yet talented. He was very good at covering the spaces on the defensive line as well as he was during attacking actions. He had decent speed, mainly on acceleration, was good at recovering balls and dangerous on the flank, making good turns, looking for space to deliver accurate crosses, shoot or burst inside the area.
