Mutch was a centre forward. He spent most of his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, 106 goals in 288 matches from 1986 to 1993. He formed a great couple of strikers with Steve Bull. He played also for Southport, Swindon Town, Wigan Athletic, Stockport County, Barrow and Telford United where he retired in 2000. He capped 3 times for England B in 1989.
Mutch was a good striker, gifted with an accurate shot. Reactive on high balls, he was mostly effective with headers, thanks also to the ability to make very good leaps to beat the defences. Sometimes he acted as assist-man, especially for Bull since he was the main scorer and the pair worked very well together.
