Melchiori is a former central, side (usually on the right) or defensive midfielder, capable of playing as sweeper or winger when necessary. His career started in 1984 at Varazze. One year later, he signed for Casale where he spent the majority of his career, played from 1985 to 1990, 1996 to 2000 and 2002 to 2005, for a total 308 appearances and 35 goals. He had the chance to play in Serie A first with Lazio in 1991-92 and then with Lecce in 1993-94 ─ he played 99 matches and scored 8 goals with the Giallorossi from 1992 to 1995. He also played for Reggiana, Modena, Valenzana and Trino.
Melchiori established himself as a skilled player since a young age being one of Casale's best players in the late 1980s. He was a versatile playmaker who possessed determination, courage, shooting ability and could provide assists. His crosses were accurate either from active play or free kick. He was effective on the sides thanks to his speed on the ball and dribbling that allowed him to challenge opponents one-on-one and sometimes get inside the box to attempt the shot. He scored numerous goals with headers following late runs the beat the defenders with great timing. He also had a solid leap with which he could overjump many defenders. Also solid in defence, he was often deployed as sweeper. He wasn't the strongest player but he knew how to hold his opponents and make decisive interventions.
In Serie A, Melchiori proved to be tactically neat and important especially for a smaller team like Lecce. Playing basically only as defensive midfielder and sweeper, he showed good technique and heading ability as well as accurate fast long balls forward and powerful long range shots. However, he understandably had problems in a superior category. Sometimes he didn't live up to the match, having underwhelming performances, especially against big clubs. He often pushed forward and was the main free kick taker at Lecce but scoring wasn't as easy as it was in Serie C. He showed more toughness but that led many times to commit penalty fouls and in some occasions to be sent off with a red card, proving to be defensively fragile.
