Jorge Campos Navarrete is an absolute exception in international football, and for the renowned Zurich sport even "the craziest footballer in the world". Because the goalkeeper of the Mexican national team, who is extremely popular in his home country, is also a first-class field player as a striker. And this not only in training, but also in competitive games for his club UNAM Mexico. Even in the national team, he swapped his brightly colored goalkeeper jersey for the field player's jersey and moved into the storm - for example at the 1993 Gold Cup tournament against Canada. Campos, of whom Pele said: "We need more of his kind. He's an exceptional talent who doesn't fit into any scheme", is likely to be the only player in the world to hold two such opposing positions at international level. "As a striker I want to score goals, as a goalkeeper I want to prevent goals. And in between I want to have fun and entertain people," said Campos himself , describing his dual role.
A notable player of Mexico in the 1990s and early 2000s, Campos was an eccentric player, known for his constant play outside the penalty area – often functioning as a sweeper-keeper, as well as his acrobatic, risky, and flamboyant style of goalkeeping, and his colourful playing attire. His main strengths as a goalkeeper were his leaping ability, athleticism, and speed when rushing off his line, as well as his ability to organize his defense, which enabled him to overcome his short stature. He was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers of his generation.
Campos also made for an effective striker, a rare example of versatility in football. At times, he would start a game in goal, and transfer upfield later in the match, mostly at the club level. In total, he scored 35 goals throughout his career, scoring all but one while playing for UNAM. His trademark, self-designed bright kits contributed to his popularity.
