Khakpour is a former centre back, capable of playing as right back. His career began in 1988 at PAS Tehran. He transferred to Persepolis in 1990, spending there five seasons. He then played in Turkey for Belediye Vanspor and in Singapore for Geylang United in the biennium 1995-96. He returned to Iran in 1997, playing for two years with Bahman Karaj. He retired in 2000 after a short experience with American team MetroStars. He capped for Iran 51 times, scoring twice. He was included in the Team of the Tournament at the end of the 1996 AFC Asian Cup, where his team reached the third place.
Khakpour was a good player, effective in the defence as much as he was in the build-up of the play. As he wasn't known for pace and agility, he wasn't too capable one-on-one against quick, technical strikers. On the other hand, he had great timing of anticipation, especially in the sliding tackle. He didn't dislike pushing forward to support the attack, which he did even more when deployed as side back. He mainly reached the midfield to distribute the ball, although he occasionally pushed further to attempt the shot. He was though notably good when he delivered long passes from the back. They weren't always accurate but they often had great speed, in particular when he kicked the ball at mid-height. Khakpour possessed also decent technique that allowed him to protect the ball before sweeping or distributing it, and occasionally dribble an opponent. Most of the times, he was in charge of throw-ins from his flank.
