Helveg was a side or wing back, mainly on the right but also on the left for necessity and acted as defensive midfielder during the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He played mainly for three teams: 171 matches and 6 goals for Odense from 1989 to 1993 and at the end of his career from 2007 to 2010; 152 games and 6 goals for Udinese from 1993 to 1998; 146 appearances and 2 goals for Milan from 1998 to 2003. He played also for Inter, Norwich City and Borussia Mönchengladbach. He gained 108 caps Denmark, scoring twice.
Helveg was equally capable as defender or midfielder. He was arguably more effective as wing back in front of a three-men defence. This way he had less defensive duties and could be more focused on the attack, supporting well the forwards thanks to good speed, stamina and accurate crossing ability. Nicknamed "pure TNT" during his time at Milan, he was also strong, reactive and able at covering the space. He possessed decent technique and a nice shot with good power.
