INFO:Ma Mingyu is a former side midfielder, mainly on the left, capable of playing as central or attacking midfielder. His career began in 1990 at Sichuan Quanxing. He then played 42 matches and scored 9 goals for Quangdong Hongyuan in the biennium 1995-1996. He came back to Sichuan Quanxing in 1997, making 88 appearances and scoring 8 goals in four years. A star in China, he was signed by Perugia's president Luciano Gaucci, who believed that Ma Mingyu would do great things like Hidetoshi Nakata. Unfortunately, the Ma Mingyu wasn't fit enough to play in Italy as he didn't settle in the Italian football, he didn't want to learn the language nor make any friend. Moreover, Chinese sources report that he was at least four years older than he claimed to be. In fact, his teammates nicknamed him "Grandpa" due to his facial appearance that made him look way older. Widely considered the worst ever Serie A transfer, he ultimately played only some minutes in a Coppa Italia game before going back to his previous team at the end of the season. He retired in 2003 after 65 more matches and 5 goals. He capped for China 86 times, scoring 13 goals. He was the team captain in their first and only participation to a FIFA World Cup in 2002, becoming also the first Chinese to shoot on goal in this competition.
Ma Mingyu was the brain of both clubs and national team. Primarily focused on the attack, he created many scoring chances as he was the main source of the left-sided attacks. He didn't have notably high speed, although he could make good accelerations, which were combined with remarkable technical and dribbling skills that he used to overcome his opponents. He played mostly outside the area, delivering good, fast passes as well as thunderous long range shots. He was nicknamed "Golden left foot" for his accurate left-footed touches, although he used his right foot well too. He was capable of shooting with the outside, giving the ball a nice curling. On top of that, he was a good set piece taker.
