Hao Haidong is a former centre forward. His career began in 1986 at Bayi, being a regular starter in the early 1990s. In 1997, he left for Dalian Shide, where he had his best time, scoring 78 goals in 130 games, winning five Jia-A Leagues, a Chinese FA Cup and three Chinese Super Cups. He was banned by the Chinese Football Federation in 1999 after a bad behavior towards a referee in a 1998 Asian Games match. He joined Sheffield United in 2005, making only one appearance as substitute in a FA Cup match. He retired one year later. He was named Chinese footballer of the year in 1998. He gained 106 caps for China, scoring 41 times ─ he's China's top ever scorer ─ and taking part to the 1992, 1996 and 2004 AFC Asian Cups as well as the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
A prolific scorer, Hao Haidong was considered the best striker in China during the 1990s. Extremely quick on the field with or without the ball and especially on acceleration, he was a threat for the opposing defences not only when he broke through them but also when he took advantage of his excellent ability to seize an opportunity in front of the goal. He possessed very good and quick dribbling that made him capable of overcoming even great defenders with a movement to the side and an increase of speed. In fact, he had a good performance against Brazil at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. His technical abilities made him effective also when moving to the side and he occasionally tried to provide assists with decent passes.
