Thomsen was equally comfortable playing as a centre back or as a defensive midfielder. His most notable attribute was his huge size, he was normally the tallest player on the pitch and he used this to his advantage, as he was excellent in the air. He was usually the main target for any corners and free kicks into the box, from which he scored several goals; he was actually Ipswich's leading scorer in the 94/95 season with 5 goals. He also had pretty reliable passing and technical abilities which allowed him to be comfortable in the midfield, although he was usually only tasked with ball winning when played in that position. Thomsen was criticised for being immobile which was true, although he had decent pace on long distances because of his large stride, he could find it difficult to close space because of his lack of acceleration and agility. His career also went into a slump after joining Everton in 1997, he had a disastrous short spell there and struggled with injuries from his late 20s onwards leading to his retirement. He won 20 caps for Denmark and represented the country at Euro 96, playing all three games in the tournament. |
