Denis Irwin played as an attacking full-back for Manchester United for twelve seasons. Joining the club at the beginning of the nineties, he was a part of the most successful decade in Manchester United history.

Irwin was born and brought up in Cork. He came to England at eighteen, and spent the following three years playing for Leeds United. In 1986 he was released by Leeds and signed for Oldham Athletic, where he played until 1990. In the 1989-1990 season Oldham played Manchester United in an FA Cup semi-final. Over two games, Irwin clearly impressed Alex Ferguson, who signed him for Manchester United that summer. He began playing at right full-back, switching to left full-back on the arrival of Paul Parker. Though mainly a right-sided player, Irwin was comfortable in either position. Playing throughout the nineties, he became one of the club’s most decorated players. In 1998-1999 he was an integral part of the side that won the treble. He played for his country, the Republic of Ireland, fifty-six times between 1990 and 1999. He left Manchester United in 2002 and moved to Wolves. He retired in 2004.

Irwin was a very well qualified full-back. He was two-footed, quick and strong. He read the game well and invariably made the right judgement on appropriate action. He kept it simple and distributed accurately. He was ready to go forward and could cross well. He was a powerful taker of free-kicks and, in his later years, scored many penalties. His only obvious limitation as a defender was his lack of height. Away from football, Denis Irwin was a quiet, unassuming man, who coped with the demands of his profession in a way that was an example to others.

Denis Irwin ended up making five hundred and twenty-nine appearances for Manchester United and was, unquestionable, one of the clubs best ever defenders.
