Di Bitonto was a goalkeeper. His career began in 1982 at Trani. He played for Barletta in 1989-90 before joining Cagliari, where he was the second choice goalkeeper from 1990 to 1995. After leaving the Rossoblu, he had some good seasons in Serie C, the first one being at Atletico Catania. He was then a protagonist at Fidelis Andria in 1996-97, when the team was promoted to Serie B: he played 37 matches in all competitions, suffering 20 goals ─ only 13 in Serie C. However, he remained in Serie C, playing for Ascoli, Viterbese and Taranto. He had the chance to play one single Serie B game with Bari in 2004-05. He retired in 2008 after three more seasons at Fidelis Andria.
Di Bitonto was gifted with reaction and great agility to make good saves. He possessed also a nice sprint to move off the goal. He didn't seem though very effective in 1-on-1 situations, many times didn't cover the goal well and, despite being not bad at blocking the ball, he often had to stop it in two times or couldn't save definitely not irresistible shots.
