Firicano was a sweeper and centre back. He spent the best time of his career at Cagliari, playing 251 matches, scoring 12 goals from 1989 to 1996 and participating to the 1993-94 UEFA Cup. He also captained the team. After leaving the Rossoblu, he played 114 games and scored 3 goals with Fiorentina from 1996 to 2001. He played also for Udinese and Salernitana among others. He retired in 2004.
Firicano was regarded as one of the best Italian sweepers during the 1990s. He was a reliable and constant defender, strong and capable in 1-on-1 duels, very good at anticipating and highly effective in the air. He wasn't very quick and had troubles against players with good dribbling ability. He generally was careful but in several occasions his toughness or wrong timing in tackles made him cause fauls. Most of his goals at Cagliari came from headers thanks to his great ability in the air that made him a threat in the opposing box. He had the brain of a midfielder and excellent tactical intelligence, often driving the team from the back. He also possessed fine technique to shoot on goal.
