Together with Patrick Vieira and Claude Makelele, Deschamps formed an impenetrable midfield for France, which many believe was the key to the team's great successes.
Initially addressed to rugby, the young Didier was spotted by scouts from Nantes. Signing for them 1983 he started his professional career, making his French league debut on 27 September 1985.
Marseille in 1989, Bordeaux in 1990 and again Marseille to get the first honors. Two French league titles in 1991 and 1992, and the Champions League in 1993 for the youngest captain ever to lead his team to the most important trophy of Europe. Moving to Italian giant Juventus in 1994, Deschamps won three Serie A titles, one Italian Cup, two Italian Supercups, and most of all his second Champions League title with the Intercontinental Cup too. Chelsea in England and Valencia in Spain are the last teams of his great playing career. He retired in summer 2001, aged 32, having played 103 times for France with 4 goals, captained in the most important achievement of his country.
A natural born leader, Deschamps was also an unsung hero on the field with his no-nonsense attitude, tough tacklings and control of midfield.
Deschamps was one of the few players to have won everything in club and international football. Playing with France's golden generation consisting of Zidane, Thuram, Desailly and Blanc, Deschamps captained France to its best era in history, winning the World Cup and the European Champions in the late nineties.
After retiring as a player, he went into football management. He was the head coach of AS Monaco in France's Ligue 1, leading Monaco to the French League Cup title in 2002–03 and to its first UEFA Champions League final in 2004. He resigned on 19 September 2005 after a poor start and disagreement with club's president. From France he went back to Italy to lead Juventus out of their very first Serie B season (2006/07). Two seasons later here it comes again the chance to manage a French side: On 5 May 2009, it was announced that Deschamps would be named manager of Marseille. In his first season, he managed them to their first Ligue 1 title in 18 years. His contract will expire in 2012.
