Bwalya is a former winger and secondary striker who could also play as centre forward, attacking and side midfielder. His career started in 1979 at Mufulira Blackpool. One year later, he joined Mufulira Wanderers where he remained until 1985. He then signed for Cercle Brugge, spending three remarkable years as he scored 33 goals in 115 matches. He eventually had his most successful time at PSV, scoring 28 goals in 127 appearances from 1988 to 1994 and winning several domestic titles. He also had a good three-year spell in Mexico at Club América from 1994 to 1997. He retired in 2000 after some brief stints in Mexico and one in the United Arab Emirates. He capped for Zambia 87 times, scoring 39 goals (other sources report 100 games and 50 goals). Named African Footballer of the Year in 1988, he's the only Zambian to win the award so far.
Considered by many the greatest ever Zambian football player alongside Godfrey Chitalu, Kalusha had though the chance to prove himself in a big European team. Bwalya was distinguished by great speed off the ball and excellent ball control. He was remarkably skilled in the dribbling, although he wasn't too fast on the ball. He possessed a solid shot and passing abilities. He wasn't the most prolific striker but he scored some great goals with his powerful left foot, was deadly in front of the goalkeeper, and had good instinct inside the box. He was also a good free kick taker. In addition, he liked helping out in his own half, using his pace to anticipate his opponents or to give his back-line a numerical advantage. Kalusha usually played on the left side but his movements through the center and switches to the other flank added great versatility.
