Radebe is a former centre-back who could also play as defensive midfielder, although he was a central midfielder in his early years. His career started at Kaizer Chiefs where he made 113 appearances and scored 5 goals from 1990 to 1994. He then signed for Leeds United where he retired in 2005 after 256 matches and 3 goals. He capped for South Africa 70 times, scoring 2 goals and winning the 1996 African Cup of Nations.
Most likely the greatest defender South Africa has ever produced, Radebe was a complete centre-back who possessed strength and overall excellent defensive qualities. He was a flawless man marker and tackler who could even stop the most fearsome strikers, anticipating them and intercepting numerous passes. His covering ability also was superb as he was always careful to protect the space in front of his goalkeeper whenever a striker had just gotten past the other centre-back. He also was extremely effective in the air, winning most high balls thanks to his great heading skill. Other than being a fantastic defender, he could rely on a very good ball distribution with either foot that allowed him to start the attack with a short pass or an accurate pinpoint cross from the back, often giving the ball high speed. He wasn't known for being skilled on the ball but he occasionally showed decent technique, especially in the rare occasions he pushed far from his area, and the surprising ability to clear the ball in acrobacy. He also wasn't particularly fast but could make good short sprints to reach an opponent to stop. And last but not least, he had incredible tenacity as he would fight for the ball during the whole match.
