Ferron is a former goalkeeper. His career started in 1986 at Sambenedettese. In 1988, he signed for Atalanta where he had his longest spell, making 293 appearances until 1996. He then played for Sampdoria, Inter, Hellas Verona, Como and Bologna. He retired in 2005.
Ferron was an excellent and complete goalkeeper due to his reliability and consistency that made him one of best goalkeepers in Serie A during the 1990s. He was even close to be called up as third goalkeeper for the 1990 FIFA World Cup. While Ferron didn't have a great jump, he was gifted with good sense of position and excellent reflexes. His saves weren't spectacular but essential and efficient. He was particularly effective between the posts or at clearing the ball coming from crosses. On the other hand, he was less capable at catching the ball firmly or in one-on-one situations, where he made most of his mistakes which were rare anyway. His determination often gave confidence to the rest of the team. In addition, Ferron possessed a good long goal kick.
