Marocchi is a former central or side midfielder, who could play also in front of the defence ─ he was occasionally used as side back. He spent his entire career at Bologna and Juventus. He played for the Felsinei from 1982 to 1988 and from 1996 to 2000, making a total 344 appearances and scoring 22 goals. He had though his best time at Juventus, playing 319 matches from 1988 to 1996, scoring 25 times, winning a Scudetto, two Coppa Italia, an Italian Supercup, two UEFA Cups and a UEFA Champions League. He gained 11 caps for Italy.
Already a veteran in the pitch since he was young and one of the most complete Italian midfielders in the 1990s, Marocchi was versatile, tenacious, capable of covering the space and building the game up. He was a very good passer, possessed extraordinary mobility, was an excellent and fast dribbler. He could make geometries with his ball distribution or make remarkable changes of rhythm. These qualities made him the driving force of Juventus midfield. He was compared to Marco Tardelli due to his playstyle and consistency. He possessed spirit of competition, great personality and very good technique. A natural left-footed, he was highly accurate also with the right foot. He alternated personal actions that he finished with a shot and runs to the end-line followed by a cut back pass for a teammate who was waiting in the box. He was a threat when rushing towards the goal thanks to good reaction, heading and tap-in ability. Adapted to more roles, he could play well even in a less advanced position, slowing down his offensive actions.
