Fan Zhiyi is a former centre-back and sweeper, though a centre-forward in his early years. His career started in 1987 in Chinese lower leagues. In 1994, he transferred to Shanghai Shenhua, playing 99 matches and scoring 40 goals. He was the top scorer with 15 goals in the 1995 Jia-A League, won by Shanghai Shenhua. In 1998, he joined Crystal Palace, where he made 102 appearances in three seasons, scoring 5 goals. He then played for Dundee FC, Cardiff City, other clubs in China and Hong Kong, retiring in 2006. He capped for China 102 times, scoring 16 goals, taking part to the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He was team captain in 34 occasions.
Fan Zhiyi was a hardworking defender, who possessed great fitness, excellent positioning, decent technical skills, tough tackling. He was mostly known for his superb aerial game especially from set piece thanks to great heading and excellent jump, great recovering speed and explosive power that made up for an average defensive ability. Remarkably versatile, he was a centre forward in his first years at Shanghai Shenhua before becoming a defender in 1997, still keeping though a good shooting ability. Also a good set piece taker, he scored some free kicks and penalties. On the other hand, he wasn't notably good at setting up the play. He showed great commitment and affection during his time at Crystal Palace as he gave all the effort he could for the team despite the financial troubles and the missing salaries.

Yes, you are right, he played as centre forward and defensive midfielder position in his early career, especially in China team.He was playing in midfielder a few after 28 years old, only in friendly match,but he played in LB and OM in 1998 World Cup Qulification. Only three times though.
