INFO:

Demis Nikolaidis was a Greek striker, famous for his association with AEK Athens where he's one of the all time top scorers and also bought the club and served as its president. Nikolaidis was one of the best Greek strikers ever, a real natural goalscorer. He was very quick and aggressive, always trying to beat the last line of defence with his movement. With the ball he was very tricky and elusive, with good control and the ability to turn and accelerate past defenders, winning a lot of free kicks for his team. And when his team didn't have the ball, he would pressure the opposition and try to use his quickness to suddenly pounce and win the ball in dangerous positions. All this combined made him a real nuisance for the opposing defenders despite his small size. When in scoring positions he was a reliable finisher with both feet and he also had good heading technique when unmarked, although he didn't really win many aerial battles. He could even link up with his fellow attackers well and could make some nice short passes occasionally. He had a fiery and passionate personality which appealed to the AEK fans but sometimes got him into trouble with authorities. Only the legends Papaioannou, Nestoridis and Mavros scored more goals for AEK than Nikolaidis, who was a boyhood fan of the club. After several years there he signed for Atletico Madrid, where he started strongly but injuries started to interrupt him and he retired at the end of the season at only 31 years of age. With the Greek national team he managed 17 goals in 54 games but missed 2 years during his prime because of a protest with his club teammates Kasapis and Atmatsidis. He was part of the Euro 2004 winning squad and, struggling with injuries, mostly played as a sub, but he started the legendary win against France. It turned out to be the last game of his career as he retired after the tournament.
