Originally a centre forward, Fontolan played most of his career as side midfielder, wing-back, winger and occasionally as side-back on the left flank at Inter, where he played 160 matches and scored 16 goals from 1990 to 1996. He played also for Legnano, Parma, Udinese, Genoa, Bologna and Cagliari, retiring in 2001.
Fontolan was capable to attack and defend thanks to determination and great speed that gave him the ability to go up and down the flank with ease. A left-footed player, he was concrete near the opposing area, even though he didn't score many goals. He had great technique and quick dribbling. Thanks to his height, he was a decent header. He usually wasn't the one who made the final pass to assist a goal but he had a decent passing ability and his playstyle was crucial in many attacking plays.
