Khamis is a former centre or defensive midfielder ─ he was a striker and particularly a winger in his early career ─ capable of playing also as centre back. He spent almost his entire career at Al-Ittihad ─ later Al-Gharafa ─ from 1983 to 2000. He had a short experience in Kuwait at Qadsia in 1997-98. He gained 71 caps for Qatar, scoring 15 goals and captaining the side for many years. He took part to five Gulf Cups, winning the 1992 edition, and the 1988 AFC Asian Cup, where he was included in the team of the tournament.
One of the biggest legends and key players in Qatari football, Khamis played mostly in the center of the field. He usually acted as attacking player, showing creativity, technique and dribbling but also being one of the most generous midfielders with the duty of providing balls for the forwards. When they couldn't score, he would support the attack even more, looking for scoring opportunity himself, usually succeeding from very favorable positions. However, he also pulled off a bunch of remarkable goals from difficult positions. He scored many important goals, one of the most important being a decisive penalty in the final of a national cup. He wasn't fast but gifted with timing and the ability to find the right spot where he could receive the ball. He was accurate with both feet, possessed a very good leap and remarkable heading ability.
