Invernizzi was a defensive or central midfielder, capable also on the sides either in midfield or defence. He could be used also as centre back. His career began in 1981 at Como, where he played once in Serie A before being loaned to Reggiana from 1982 to 1984. He came back to Como and played 129 Serie A games, scoring 3 goals, from 1984 to 1989. He then transferred to Sampdoria, scoring 6 times in 237 appearances from 1989 to 1997 ─ year of his retirement ─ even though he started most matches from the bench. He won with the Blucerchiati a Cup Winners' Cup, a Scudetto, an Italian Cup and an Italian Supercup.
Invernizzi was a good and very versatile player. Despite not being always a regular starter, he put lots of effort in every game and, like his teammate Fausto Pari, he was one of the midfield hardworkers. Mainly focused on the defensive duties, he was neat, reactive, possessed decent speed, nice technique and good strength in physical duels despite not having a huge physique. He occasionally pushed forward, showing a fine shooting ability.
