Sheringham was a secondary striker, centre forward or attacking midfielder. His career began in 1983 at Millwall: 262 matches and 111 goals until 1991. In the middle he played for Aldershot and Djurgårdens in 1984-85. Then he played the 1991-92 season at Nottingham Forest, scoring 22 goals in 53 games, before joining Tottenham Hotspur in 1992-93. He scored 98 times in 197 with the Spurs in five seasons. In 1997 he transferred to Manchester United: 153 games and 46 goals in four seasons. After leaving the Red Devils he played for Tottenham Hotspur again, Portsmouth, West Ham United and Colchester United, where he retired in 2008. He gained 51 caps for England and scored 11 goals.
Sheringham was a strong and tactically clever player, gifted with good technique and sense of goal. He was an opportunist inside the box, effective with both head and feet, could use well the outside of the foot and showed ability to score in difficult situations. He wasn't only an able scorer but he also provided many assists, especially thanks to his short passing ability that was very useful in his late career, when he lost speed and stamina. Moreover he proved to be a good free kick taker, especially during his time at Millwall. He used his physique as advantage in the midfield to take, hold and defend the ball before delivering a pass and sometimes he helped in defence.
