Newell is a former centre forward. His career began in 1982 at Crewe Alexandra. He played between 1983 and 1991 for Wigan Athletic, Luton Town, Leicester City and Everton, always with a good scoring rate. In 1991 he joined Blackburn Rovers, where he stayed for five seasons, scoring 30 goals in 140 matches and winning the 1994-95 Premier League, even though as reserve. He played also for Birmingham City, West Ham United, Bradford City, Aberdeen, Doncaster Rovers and Blackpool. He retired in 2001. Some injuries probably prevented him from having a better career.
Newell was gifted with a strong physique, accuracy with both feet and good heading ability. A prolific scorer, he could finalize the attacking action with spectacular goals from difficult positions. He moved fluidly and possessed remarkable speed on long distance despite his size. He also had enough technique to control the ball and keep it near the opposing goal.
