Bardsley is a former right back. He spent most of his career at Queens Park Rangers from 1989 to 1998, playing 296 matches and scoring 6 goals. He played also for Blackpool, Watford and Oxford United. He retired in 2001. He gained 2 caps for England in the biennium 1992-93 while playing for Queens Park Rangers.
Bardsley was a good player, active in both defensive and offensive play. He was though more effective in the latter since he pushed forward very often to support the attack. He possessed good stamina and speed, particularly on acceleration, decent reaction, fine dribbling and excellent ball control. He could distribute the ball well, especially delivering accurate crosses from the back or the end line. He had a decent shooting ability and occasionally took free kicks.
