Favalli is a former left-back or centre back. His career began in 1988 at Cremonese, where he played 102 matches and scored 3 goals in four seasons. In 1992 he transferred to Lazio, where he had his longest and best experience. He spent twelve seasons with the Biancocelesti, playing 401 games, scoring 6 times and winning three Italian Cups, two Italian Supercups, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, a UEFA Supercup and a Scudetto. He joined Inter in 2004, playing 68 matches in two seasons. He retired in 2010 after 99 appearances with Milan in four years. He gained 8 caps for Italy.
Favalli was a very good defender, in possession of great tactical awareness and remarkable technique. He added balance with his constant movements on the left flank, supporting midfield and forward line, covering the ground in defence, doing everything extremely well. Almost only left-footed, he possessed fine pace and quite accurate though not really quick dribbling. Also, his good passing ability enabled him to provide many assists. As he defended efficiently, he was often deployed in the centre of the defence. However, he couldn't properly show his qualities in this role. With a solid but not too strong physique, and he was tough but fair in the tackle and capable of anticipating the opponent well. Always reliable and consistent, he though had fragile muscles that made him prone to injuries.
In his late career as Milan player, the understandable loss of speed made it hard for him to keep up the pace of many wingers. Also, he didn't rely on his technique as much as he did at Lazio. Nonetheless, his defensive abilities was improved, and his ball distribution was still solid as he could support the strikers with good passes and crosses at the end of his occasional raids forward. He may not always have been on time in the tackles due to his loss of quickness and reaction, but his positioning and anticipation were of high level.
