Gallen was a centre forward or winger in a three-man forward line who played most of his career at Queens Park Rangers where his professional career began in 1994. In his first two seasons he was already a regular in Premier League: 74 matches and 21 goals in all competitions. Unfortunately, at the start of the 1996-97 Championship season he suffered a bad injury and his performances were never the same again. He played for Huddersfield Town and Barnsley in 2000-01 before coming back to Queens Park Rangers. He had two good seasons in League One and Championship between 2003 and 2005: 28 goals in 97 games. He was very important in the 2003-04 season that ended with the team gaining the promotion to Championship and Gallen scored 17 league goals. He left QPR in 2007 after a total of 414 matches and 104 goals. Then he played for several other clubs including Milton Keynes Dons and Luton Town. He retired in 2013.
Gallen was a striker gifted with a strong physique and good sprint. He wasn't a very prolific scorer and could miss easy goals from favourable positions. However he was a good header and could shoot well from more difficult positions or with first time touches. He could use both feet as well as the outside of the foot, had good technique and decently accurate − if not too fast − dribbling. He showed to have a not bad passing ability, delivering a good amount of assists.
