Locatelli was an attacking midfielder who played also as winger in his early years and central midfielder in his late career. Grown up at Atalanta, he made his debut with the first team in 1993. He joined Milan in 1995 but remained only one seasons and a half, without success. He then had his best time at Udinese from 1997 to 2000, playing 105 matches, scoring 10 goals and gaining 2 caps for Italy. He had though his longest spell at Bologna from 2000 to 2005, scoring 18 goals in 116 games. He left the Felsinei for Siena, where he played for three seasons. He retired in 2012 after spells at Mantova, Spal and Arezzo.
Locatelli was a very talented and creative playmaker, gifted with superb control of the ball and technique, a fantastic left foot but also accuracy with the right. Highly effective for the attacking actions, he served his teammates with excellent short and long passes, headers or volleys. He possessed very good speed and dribbling ability that he shwoed either on the wings or through the center. His mobility was seen also when he converged towards the goal to hit the ball with good headers, sometimes preceeded by excellent leaps. Volleys and shots with the outside were his specialties. Locatelli's career was slowed by problems of condition and consistency.
