INFO

Trifon Marinov Ivanov (27 July 1965 – 13 February 2016) was a Bulgarian professional footballer who played as a defender. Before he played his later master position of libero, he was primarily used in the attack - this is an explanation that he, much to the excitement of some of his coaches, in individual matches temporarly forgetting his defensive duties to prefer to storm himself. Ivanov is famous for his long-range shots and free-kicks, his speed and tackling. He had a lot of 40-45 yards shots at goal narrowly missing the target. Defender with great physical strength in the tackles and at the same time speed on the side lanes. Trifon Ivanov had a great offensive propensity both for his frequent forward projections and for his very powerful shot that allowed him to shoot from long distance. With the Bulgarian national team he rarely took set pieces often entrusted to the more precise Stoichkov. Ivanov joined in 1991 for three years in the Betis, where he experienced many ups and downs. In particular, criticized for his lack of discipline, he was sold in 1994 at Neuchâtel Xamax. His second season with the Swiss club was dominated by the confrontation with coach Gilbert Gress, whom he accused of ignorance about the sport of football, after which Ivanov had to go back and play for a few months for CSKA Sofia. In 1995 he came with his wife and daughters to Vienna and bought a house in Vienna Floridsdorf. He moved to that same club where he experienced his most successful period, the Austrian club SK Rapid Vienna. In his first season he managed the league title with Rapid and came down to the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup. His great performance in the following year gave him even in the Champions League was nominated in Europe's "Team of the Year. But Trifon Ivanov played so well in the Champions League, he played so bad in some championship games and fell to as already in Neuchatel, mainly through lack of discipline, which deeply angered his coach Ernst Dokupil. 1997 championship as a rapid decisive match against Salzburg Austria lost and Ivanov in the last minutes of the game unnecessarily saw the red card, threw Dokupil the Bulgarians, despite a contract until 1998, off the team. Until then, he was in for Rapid in 53 championship matches (7 goals) and 17 European Cup games (3 goals) used. Not to be expelled for the remainder of his contract from the amateurs Rapid Vienna in the minor league, he moved quickly to arch-rivals of his former employer, namely, FK Austria Wien. But even there he was denied any further success, why he chose back in his Bulgarian homeland to go to CSKA Sofia in order to prepare for the World Cup in France. His last year in Vienna he played but still in the Viennese League to his daughters the end of compulsory education (the older she finished in Vienna, the younger is still studying in Bulgaria) to allow. He played in that time, the FAC (Floridsdorfer athletic sports club), where he also finished his career finally in 2001. For Bulgaria Trifon Ivanov collected from 1988-1998 a total of 75 games in which he was able to achieve eight goals. 1994 Ivanov surprised with his Bulgarian teammates the entire sports world - as an Nobody traveled to the World Cup team in 1994, they reached the semi-final and proved surprisingly finally the fourth slot, with Ivanov had a big role in this success. The second World Cup finals by Ivanov (France 1998) was less glorious. After his career end, Trifon Ivanov bought several gas stations in and around Sofia, together with Hristo Stoichkov a bank in Bulgaria.
