INFO:

Werder Bremen legend Dieter Eilts was one of the leading defensive midfielders in Europe throughout the 90's. He was doing all "dirty" work necessary for good team play. Eilts began his football career with the SV-Hage in Ostfriesland. From 1985 to 2002 he played for Werder Bremen total of 390 Bundesliga games and scored seven goals. After he was already part of the 1985/86 season first team of the Hanseatic citiy, had to wait Eilts to the following season to get his first professional match in the jersey of green and white. On 17th Round, 5 December 1986, he made his debut. In 1986/87 also at that time young players stood strong in the shadow of the permanent staff as Gunter Hermann, Norbert Meier, Mirko Votava and one year older Thomas Wolter. Only in the second half of the 1988/89 season Eilts managed the breakthrough in Bremen. From 24 Match day he was constantly in the starting lineup of the SVW and missed for remainder of the season no game. In addition, he was in the DFB Cup final against Borussia Dortmund, which lost to Werder 1:4. The year before he was part of the Bremen team already celebrating winning the German championship, completed at that time only two league games. With the start of the season 1989/90 to 2000/01, in more than ten years, Eilts was not out of the midfield in Werder team. Apart from one season, he completed more than 25 Bundesliga games ever year for the North Germans. In 1990 the team again reached the final of the German Cup. Final opponent this time was the 1 FC Kaiserslautern. The Bremen, which Eilts played like last year, the full ninety minutes, lost 2-3 and had to put off the following year. Eilts scored in the league at 31 March 1990 his first of seven league goals. In 1991, the Bremen played for the third consecutive year in the finals of DFB Cup.
After Eilts scored the 1-0 lead, Maurice Banach scored for 1 FC Cologne, so the penalties had to decide. There, Werder sat by and Eilts needed the third attempt for the first time to win the German Cup. This qualified the club for the 1991/92 European Cup Winners' Cup. After the FC Bacau, Ferencvaros Budapest, Istanbul and Galatasaray, FC Bruges stood the SVW on the way to the final where the winner had to face AS Monaco. Eilts after missing the semi-final against Rotterdam because of a red card suspension, stood against the French representative in the starting lineup. Bremen decided the game with 2-0 and Eilts celebrated his first and only international club title. In 1994 and 1999, they repeated triumphs in the German Cup competition. In both games he wasfor the full game on the field. Back in 1993,Werder won the German championship for a second time. In 2001/02 Eilts was still in the squad of Bremen, but did not go beyond four games. All of them between the first and fourth day of the season. His last league game he played on 18 August 2001 against TSV 1860 Munich. Since 1993, Dieter Eilts was part of the wider circle of the national team. Berti Vogts put the midfielder for the first time on 18 December 1993 in the friendly against the USA. The breakthrough in black and white dress he succeeded in the 1995/1996 season. During the European Football Championship 1996 in England he was regarded as essential pillar of the German team that won the European Championship for the third time, and was elected to the UEFA Allstars team of this tournament. Overall Eilts completed until 1997 31 internationals. His last game he attended in the qualifying match for the FIFA World Cup 1998 on 7 June 1997 against Ukraine.
