There, Roy Hodgson took over the training and under whose direction Thern finished with the team over the next three years, each first place in the Allsvenskan. In each subsequent championship finals in 1986 and 1987 MFF reached the final, which was against AIK in the first year of the championship titles, while IFK Gothenburg in 1987 was able to prevail on away goals rule. In parallel, Thern played in the Swedish national selection, in which he 14 October 1987 in a 1-1 draw against the German national team with goals from Pierre Littbarski and Glenn Hysén in Gelsenkirchen's Park Stadium debut. Thern first time in early 1988 left Sweden and moved to Switzerland for FC Zurich. Making its debut on 6 March of the year in the championship game against Martigny-Sports, he scored in a 3-1 success over time between the hits with a 2-0 lead. Under coach Timo Konietzka he came to mid-April in five league games for use and then returned to Sweden. After a 0-0 draw in the first leg against Djurgarden managed in the return game a 7-3 success, the second win of the Von Rosen's Cup in Therns meant career. The following season was marked for Thern and his team once again a dominant role in the league down, he opted to change clubs during the summer and went to the Portuguese club Benfica, who had pledged to Sven-Goran Eriksson, a Swedish coach. Without him as the leader of MFF moved into the final one for the title, but moved to the second table of the regular season IFK Norrkoping lose out on penalties. Nevertheless, the year was successful for Thern, recorded shortly before the end of the Swedish daily newspaper Aftonbladet and Svenska Fotbollförbundet him with the best football players as Guldbollen of the year. The reigning Portuguese champions are added Thern in the root formation. With the club he reached the final of the Champions Cup in 1989/90 of the final opponents AC Milan on 23 May 1990 Prater Stadium with a goal by Frank Rijkaard decided for themselves. Even then discharged at World Cup 1990 tournament in Italy he was part of the squad, and came to two stakes tournament. The selection team knew and was the surprise group winners before the later champions Denmark, France and England, the semi-finals, where they failed against Germany. After the tournament concludes Thern moved further into the Italian Serie A. In Napoli, who was sidelined since last year because of a doping suspension on his star Diego Maradona, he played alongside players such as Careca, Daniel Fonseca and Gianfranco Zola. With the two-time Italian champions AS Roma to date Thern arrived first places in the UEFA Cup. The greatest success there was in the UEFA Cup 1995/96 reaching the quarter-finals where the team failed in the extension of Slavia Prague. After it had passed in the season 1996/97 only to a twelfth place in the league, the defender decided to change clubs and left Italy without a title. New club Therns was the summer of 1997, the Scottish club Glasgow Rangers. After the club under manager Walter Smith had won nine championships in series, the team arrived at Brian Laudrup, Ally McCoist and Richard Gough in the first year of the Swedes at the club to second place behind rivals Celtic. The following season the Dutchman Dick Advocaat took over as the first non-Scot as coach at the club. Thern was, however, long-term injury, so he came along side the likes of Jorg Albertz, Gennaro Gattuso and Giovanni van Bronckhorst only ever a league game and an insert in the UEFA Cup. After the expiry of his contract in the summer of 1999 wanted to keep him Advocaat, Thern but decided because of a likelihood of a further operation to end career. Thern returned to end his career back to Sweden and took over the coaching job at his hometown club IFK Värnamo. With the club he joined in 2000 to the third division, where he managed to avoid relegation. He then took over from the 2002 coaching job in the first division Halmstads BK by Tom Prahl, which was changed to Malmö FF. He could not build on the successes of its predecessor, reaching with the club only places in the middle of the league. In October 2003 he completed his commitment to coach and gave as a reason to want to take care of his family. Thern is currently as a teacher at John Bauer gymnasium in Värnamo active.
