Hendry is a former centre back. He spent most of his career at Blackburn Rovers, making over 300 appearances from 1987 to 1998 (excluding a two year spell at Manchester City between 1989 and 1991) and scoring 34 goals. He was a striker in his early career. He played also for Dundee FC, Rangers, Coventry City, Bolton Wanderers, Preston North End and Blackpool before retiring in 2003. He capped for Scotland 51 times, scoring 3 goals.
A key player in Blackburn Rovers' defence, Hendry was tall, brave, tenacious and powerful due to his imposing physique. He was very capable in the air as he could win numerous balls with his head. Furthermore, he often pushed forward and was a threat during set pieces as he looked to score with headers.
