Marcolin was a central and defensive midfielder. He grew up at Cremonese, where he played 63 matches and scored 5 goals with the first team between 1989 and 1992. He then joined Lazio, where he appeared in 110 games and scored twice from 1992 to 2000, even though he was loaned to Cagliari in 1993-94, Genoa in 1994-95 and Blackburn Rovers in 1999. He played also for Sampdoria, Piacenza, Napoli and Palazzolo, retiring in 2005.
Marcolin was mainly a defensive player who had the task to stop the opposing attacks but he could also be a sort of playmaker from the back. He was left-footed, added continuity to the play of his team, possessed good basic technique and vision of the game. He was though criticized for his slowness, which was enhanced even more in his late career, when he played almost without moving and many times slowed down the entire play of his team.
