Matteo Villa was a centre back, who could play also as side back, mainly on the right. Grown up at Milan, he spent the majority of his career at Cagliari, playing 298 matches, scoring 10 goals and participating to the 1993-94 UEFA Cup. He played also for Reggiana, Napoli and Genoa. He retired in 2005.
Regarded as one of Cagliari's greatest captains, Villa was a good, fair man marker and a leader in the field. He didn't have remarkable technique and wasn't too quick, suffering mainly against fast dribblers. He was though capable at intercepting the ball, especially in the air, and was gifted with great personality as well as excellent tactical sense.
