He spent the majority of his career at Sampdoria, playing 566 matches and scoring 171 goals from 1982 to 1997. One of the most important players in the history of the Blucerchiati, he led the team to win six Italian Cups, the 1989-90 Cup Winners' Cup, the 1990-91 Scudetto and the 1991 Italian Supercup. He won his second Italian championship with Lazio, where he played from 1997 to 2000, scoring 24 goals in 136 games. He played also for Bologna at the beginning of his career and a few matches with Leicester City before retiring in 2001. He gained 36 caps for Italy, scoring 4 goals. He undoubtedly deserved much more space in the national team and he would've had it if it wasn't for his charisma and heated attitude that led him to some issues especially with coach Azeglio Vicini. Regarded as one of the greatest ever attacking players Italy has ever produced, Mancini was a fantastic and creative playmaker. Arguably one of the best passers in the 90s, he had the ability to deliver short or long balls from any position with either right or left foot. His crosses were especially outstanding since they always serve for a teammate to unmark himself and receive the ball. Mancini was also a great scorer, preferring shooting from various angles and in difficult situations rather than favorable positions. Due to his scoring ability, he was sometimes used as centre forward. His performances weren't too constant but he could change the ongoing match at any moment thanks to his superb technical qualities. He was also one of the best dribblers at the time and during his time at Lazio, he improved his shot technique by scoring several times with outstanding volleys and heel touches ─ which he also used to assist teammates. His movements, if not too quick, were sudden, accurate and could beat the defenders with ease. He was also an able piece taker, a decent header and quite reactive whenever he could take advantage of a mistake committed by the opposing defence or goalkeeper. Spoiler: show |
