Carrera is a former centre back, capable of playing also as sweeper and side back. His career began in 1982 in Serie D. He arrived to Serie B when he joined Pescara in 1985. The following season, he transferred to Bari, where he played 180 matches and scored 5 goals until 1991, when he was bought by Juventus. He had with the Bianconeri a very successful six year spell, which ended with the win of the 1995-96 UEFA Champions League, after he already won a UEFA Cup, a Scudetto, a Coppa Italia and an Italian Supercup. He played 166 games and scored one goal for Juventus. He also capped once for Italy in 1992. He eventually had his longest spell at Atalanta, playing 242 matches and scoring 4 goals from 1996 to 2003. He retired in 2008 after spells with Napoli, Treviso and Pro Vercelli.
Carrera was a very good and tough defender, a careful and strong man marker who never gave up and could add stability to the defence. He was capable of intercepting the ball in the air, possessed fine technique, could deliver fast and accurate long balls to the forwards. In fact, despite being mainly a centre back, he proved to be even more helpful when playing as sweeper. He also was effective as side back thanks to a good speed that allowed him to push forwad and take advantage of his crossing ability. He had a powerful kick that was seen not only in his long passes but also in his single Juventus goal: a thunderous shot inside the box. During his time as Atalanta captain, he didn't push forward but preferred staying in the backline, tackling his opponents and adding great experience to the defence thanks to his mentality and determination. He still could provide the forward line with good long balls.
