Ielpo is a former goalkeeper. He had his peak at Cagliari, where he played 205 Serie A matches. He was one of the most important players during the team's double promotion from Serie C1 to Serie A and the UEFA Cup qualification in 1992-93. He played also for Siena, Lazio, Milan − as second goalkeeper − and Genoa, where he retired in 1998.
Remembered for his reliability, Ielpo was a good goalkeeper and one of the most consistent in Serie A during his time. His saves were always essential, never spectacular. Comfortable between the posts, he was effective at covering and protecting the goal as well as saving dangerous long range shots. He had good agility, leap and great reaction.
