Giannini is a former attacking and central midfielder. He spent almost his entire career at Roma, making 437 appearances from 1981 to 1996, scoring 75 goals. He retired in 1999 after experiences with Sturm Graz, Napoli and Lecce. He capped 47 times for Italy, scoring 6 goals and taking part to the 1990 UEFA Euro. One of the best Italian playmaker during the 1980s and early 1990s, he mostly played behind the strikers, acting in a less advanced position during his last years with the Giallorossi. Giannini wasn't too fast but was gifted with excellent vision, passing ability and technique. He was elegant with his movements, always playing head-on. Highly accurate with both feet, he possessed also a threatening and powerful shot even with the outside. He rarely made mistakes while keeping the ball and when he set up the play, he often rushed towards the goal with superb timing in order to receive the ball back and score, showing also a very good heading ability. A set piece specialist, he scored some free kicks and almost 20 penalties, most of them during the 1988-89 and 1992-93 seasons. He wasn't too consistent and had a troublesome personality, resulting in personal problems especially with coach Ottavio Bianchi.
