INFO:
Pioli was a centre back, capable to play also as right back and sweeper. He grew up at Parma, where he also began his professional career in 1982. A very promising defender, he was bought by Juventus in 1984 but he played only 57 matches ─ scoring once ─ in three seasons because of several bad injuries that prevented him from becoming a regular with the Bianconeri and from having a brighter future. He then spent two seasons at Hellas Verona before joining Fiorentina in 1989. He had at Firenze the most consistent time, playing 185 games ─ scoring again once ─ in six seasons. He retired in 1999 after spells at Padova, Pistoiese and minor leagues.
Pioli was a talented and reliable defender, who had the mentality of a veteran from the beginning of his career despite his young age. Not very fast, he was mainly used as man marker either if he played as centre or side back. He was also good at pushing forward and supporting the attack thanks to decent technique and passing ability but he wasn't exactly the kind of player who could finish the action with a decisive pass. During his time at Fiorentina, he was used only in the center of the defence and played way more frequently. His movement were slower but he improved his marking and tackling abilities as well as timing of reaction, which were an addition to his good strength. Sometimes though his tackles weren't too, causing several fouls. He didn't join the attack as he sometimes did in his earlier career but he could be seen in the opposing box during set pieces to take advantage of his interceptions and heading.
