Sanna was a defensive and central midfielder. He spent the best time of his career at Cagliari from 1992 to 1998, playing 186 matches goals and participating to the 1993-94 UEFA Cup. He played also for Sampdoria, Torino and several Sardinian clubs. He retired in 2009.
Sanna was a good defensive player, a tough anchor man who wasn't though very effective as man marker. However, he could sometimes stop his opponent thanks to strength and determination. His shots had good power but he didn't score. He didn't possess remarkable technique but was a decent passer who delivered mainly long balls, occasionally from free kick.
