INFO:

Mark Hughes is a true United legend. Very powerful and popular striker who scored 163 goals in two spells at the club, and was part of the team that finally became champions again after the barren years of the seventies and eighties.

Mark Hughes was born in 1963 and grew-up in the village of Ruabon, near Wrexham. He joined Manchester United when he left school, and made his first senior appearance in 1983, a few days before his twentieth birthday. His first full season was 1984-1985: he scored twenty-four goals that season and was the club’s leading scorer. His committed and effective play soon made him a favourite among the supporters. During the 1985-1986 season, these supporters became outraged when it emerged that Hughes was likely to leave. He didn’t sign the new contract offered to him and was promptly sold to Barcelona. Two years later, Alex Ferguson re-signed him and Hughes returned to Old Trafford to popular acclaim. He returned a better player. While at Barcelona, he spent time on loan at Bayern Munich, and his experience at these two major European clubs developed his game. Hughes was a leading member of Alex Ferguson’s side over the following seven seasons. During this period Manchester United finally became champions again (1992-1993), they won the European Cup Winners Cup, (1990-1991) and the Premiership and FA Cup double (1993-1994). Many still consider this double-winning side to be one of the strongest ever to represent Manchester United.

As a young man, Hughes was quiet and diffident. Manager Ron Atkinson poked fun at his temperament nicknaming him ‘Sparky’ - a nickname that stuck. Though quiet and unassuming off the field, Hughes played with determination and aggression on it. He was a strong, muscular centre-forward. He had good ball-control, was happy receiving the ball while facing his own defence, and brought others into the game with his accurate distribution. He is best remembered for a fearsome shot and for scoring a number of explosive and dramatic goals. To date, only six players have scored more goals for Manchester United than Mark Hughes. In both 1988-1989 and 1990-1991 Hughes was voted PFA Player’s Player of the Year.

In 1994-1995 the club signed Andy Cole from Newcastle United. Shortly afterwards Eric Cantona was suspended following an incident at Crystal Palace. Hughes played alongside Cole for the rest of that season and then moved to Chelsea that summer anticipating that Cole and Cantona would be the first choice strikers for the following year. After playing for four further clubs, Hughes retired from playing in 2002. To a certain amount of surprise he was happy to enter management, and is currently manager of Queens Park Rangers. Describing the management style of Alex Ferguson, it was Hughes who first made reference to the ‘hairdryer’.

Mark Hughes represented Wales on seventy-two occasions.
