Allegri is a former central or attacking midfielder. He played mainly as defensive midfielder in his late career. Throughout his career, which began in 1984, he played for many clubs including Livorno, Pisa, Cagliari, Perugia, Padova, Napoli and Pistoiese. However, he had his best times at Pescara, where he played from 1991 to 1993 and from 1998 to 2000, for a total of 115 matches and 22 goals. He retired in 2003.
Allegri was a very talented player, who ended up being not more than decent due to his lack of effort and consistency that stopped him from playing in bigger clubs and gain call-ups for Italy. Gifted with a high offensive prowess, he was fast on both short and long distances, making remarkable progressions with the ball, thanks to which he could run through the defences. He possessed good dribbling and agility, helped also by his thin physique. The brain of his teams, he was a good playmaker, gifted with vision, passing and shooting ability, also from set piece, especially from penalty. His shots usually were powerful and delivered with the outside. A leader in the field, he was the kind of player who moved everywhere in order to give his teammates help in a specific zone when needed.
