Wright is a former centre-back and sweeper. His career started in 1980 at Oxford United. He signed for Southampton in 1982, making 231 appearances and scoring 13 goals in five seasons. In 1987, he transferred to Derby County, where he played 173 matches and scored 10 goals in four years. He had his final stint at Liverpool from 1991 to 1998, playing 210 games and scoring 9 goals. He capped for England 45 times, scoring once.
Wright was a remarkable defender, tough, dominant in the air, composed on the ball, gifted with solid pace, ball control, imposing strength, excellent game reading ability, high determination and mentality. He was as good in the anticipation as he was in the tackling. He was nearly unbeatable in the air as he had a great jump and could win most high balls, being also a threat in the opposition's goal. He was a leader of the back-line, very cool under pressure, never flustered, competitive when necessary, always in the right place at the right time. Furthermore, he was very vocal and enjoyed bossing the defence with authority. Extremely effective in carrying the ball out of the defensive zone, he displayed a smooth style of play that earned him comparisons with legend Alan Hansen. Therefore, he was as commanding on the ground as he was in the air. Although he was past his prime and suffered some injuries at Liverpool, he was instrumental during that club's underwhelming period.
