Winterburn is a former side-back, mainly on the left flank. He made his professional debut in 1983 at Wimbledon, where he played nearly 200 matches in four seasons. He then spent most of his career at Arsenal, making 584 appearances from 1987 to 2000, scoring 12 goals. When he joined Arsenal, he had the hard task to replace the legendary Kenny Sansom, which he did very well. Before joining the "Gunners", he played four seasons at Wimbledon, appearing almost 200 times. He retired in 2003 after three years at West Ham United. Despite being considered one of the best left-backs in the Arsenal's history, he was surprisingly capped for England only twice.
Winterburn showed incredible consistency for almost two decades. He was mostly a defensive player capable of stopping his opponents with fierce tackles. He was gifted with outstanding stamina and determination as well as tactical awareness. This combination allowed him to avoid his opponents to steal a single yard from him. However, he didn't refuse to push forward down the side at good speed when he had the chance, sometimes even trying to score with powerful long range shots. But most importantly, he delivered numerous assists thanks to his cut back passes and superb crosses from free kick or the touch-line. Furthermore, he was a long throw specialist.
