Manicone is a former defensive or central midfielder. He had his best time at Inter from 1992 to 1996 − excluding the loan at Genoa in the 1994-95 season − scoring 2 goals in 79 matches and capping once for Italy. He played also for Licata, Palermo, Foggia, Udinese, Perugia, Lecco and Pro Patria, retiring in 2003.
Manicone was a neat, tireless and tactically intelligent midfielder. He was a nice passer, could use the outside of the foot and was dangerous with long range shots. He interpreted his role in a correct and linear way. He wasn't very keen but mostly disturbed the opponents with persistence and grit, recovering balls before supporting the teammates. In fact, he mainly acted in cover of the defence, when the opposing attacking plays were becoming fast and threatening. He ran a lot, taking advantage of his athleticism, and distributed the ball in a simple way, using short passes rather than long ones. He didn't waste energy avoiding as much as possible useless pushes forward.
