André Cruz is a former sweeper, centre back and defensive midfielder. His career began in Brazil in 1987, playing for Ponte Preta and Flamengo. He transferred to Standard Liège in 1990, playing 107 matches and scoring 18 goals in four seasons. He joined Napoli in 1994, staying there for three years and scoring 14 times in 98 games. His experience with the Partenopei was limited by injuries starting from the second season. He then played with no big success for Milan, again Standard Liège and Torino, before having a good two-year spell at Sporting CP between 2000 and 2002. He retired in 2004 after spells at Goiás and Internacional. He gained 31 caps for Brazil, scoring once and taking part to the 1989 and 1995 Copa América as well as the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
André Cruz was a strong defender and good tackler, not too fast, gifted with personality and remarkable technique. A free kick specialist, the trajectories he drew with his accurate and powerful long range shots were a threat for any goalkeeper. He was almost only left-footed but he occasionally scored some good goals with the right as well. A good passer, he could trigger the action from the back with fast long balls or through passes. He possessed also a fine heading ability.
