Rideout is a former centre forward. His career began in 1980 at Swindon Town, where he scored 38 goals in 95 matches in three seasons. A promising player, he joined Aston Villa, scoring 19 times in 54 appearances from 1983 and 1985 ─ he scored most goals in the second season. He was surprisingly sold to Bari alongside Gordon Cowans. In his first season, he scored 6 goals in 28 Serie A games. Regardless Bari's relegation, Rideout remained for two more seasons, scoring 17 goals in 71 matches. After experiences with Southampton, Swindon Town, Notts County and Rangers, he signed for Everton. Here, he had four good seasons, scoring 29 goals in 111 games. He then spent some years some in China and USA before coming back to England at Tranmere Rovers, retiring in 2002.
Rideout was a striker with good eye of goal, elevation and a remarkable heading ability. He wasn't too fast but he possessed notable technique and dribbling. He wasn't selfish as he sometimes moved to the flank in order to deliver a pass in the box. He was a threat inside the area as he often tried to make the defenders commit a foul on him. He himself sometimes kicked the penalty. He could've become a more successful player but he lacked of consistency throughout his entire career.
