Attack MindedINFO:Thompson was a right or left back who spent most of his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers with 451 matches and 45 goals from 1986 to 1997 and contributing to the rise of the club from the fourth to the first division. He played also for West Bromwich Albion, Tranmere Rovers, Cardiff City, Shrewsbury Town and Hednesford Town, where he retired in 2003.
A very short player, Thompson was gifted with speed and was an able penalty taker − considered the penalty king of his era. He was a very offensive side back who constantly supported the attack. Able to use both feet, he had decent technique, could be dangerous from the distance with shots that had good power, occasionally tried to score from inside the box and was able to deliver very accurate crosses from both flanks. Not too efficient as defender due to his physique, he had though decent leap and heading ability for a player of his size while his quickness helped him when he had to intercept the ball. He was versatile and could play in the midfield as wing-back or side midfielder when needed. In fact his main position was midfielder in his early career at West Bromwich Albion.
