Southgate is a former defender and midfielder. His career began in 1990 at Crystal Palace, where he was initially used as right back and then mainly as central midfielder. He played 191 matches and scored 22 goals for the "Eagles" until he left in 1995. Playing 110 games only in the last two seasons at the club, he was especially important in the 1993-94 First Division winning season, where he greatly helped by scoring 9 goals ─ 12 in all competitions. He joined Aston Villa in 1995 and his position was changed to centre back, usually on the left and sometimes in the middle, while he was rarely used as central midfielder. He became part of a formidable defence and went on playing 243 matches, scoring 8 goals, in six seasons, winning the Football League Cup in the first year with the team. In 2001, he eventually transferred to Middlesbrough, where he stayed until his retirement in the 2005-06 season, which ended with the "Boro" reaching the UEFA Cup final. He played 204 games and scored 4 goals for Middlesbrough, winning his second Football League Cup in 2003-04. The defender gained 57 caps for England, scoring twice and taking part to the 1996 UEFA Euro, 1998 FIFA World Cup and 2000 UEFA Euro.
Southgate already showed great technical qualities as central midfielder. He was equally efficient in the middle of the field thanks to his interception and passing abilities, especially when delivering fast long balls, as well as his resistance to physical challenges. He pushed forward whenever he had the chance, showing reaction, heading and shooting ability, even first time. As defender at both Aston Villa and Middlesbrough he was always reliable, improved his defensive and intercepting abilities, excelling at positioning and tackling, making clearances or recovering the ball by taking it off an opposing striker. He didn't push forward as he did at Crystal Palace but he still had very good technique and most importantly didn't lose his passing ability. In fact, he could deliver accurate long pinpoint balls from the back.
