Howey is a former centre back, who was occasionally used as centre forward. He spent most of his career at Newcastle United, playing 191 matches from 1989 to 2000. He sufferd many injuries that affected his career. He played also for Manchester City, Leicester City, Bolton Wanderers and retired in 2005. He gained 4 caps for England, failing to become a regular in the national team.
Initially a striker, Howey possessed strength and good technique but wasn't able to score enough. Therefore, his position was changed to defender. His physique and technical qualities combined with good speed and vision of the game made him more than just a good man marker. In fact, he was a defender who could push forward with the ball in order to carry it away from his own penalty area.
